This week, we are adding a substantial upgrade to the game experience with the arrival of the the Melee System. This is meant to bring the experience a lot closer to the original factions melee, although we have to use the parts given to us by Part 2. First, we've added lock on for punching. This makes fights significantly less awkward as players will no longer be punching the air next to opponents and sliding past them. We've also increased the damage to 20 per hit.
The biggest change however is the introduction of executions. When a player is below the last punches' health threshold, instead of just hitting the player we now play an execution animation, which is visible to both parties. For now, it doesn't have any effects on gameplay besides looking cool, but we're sure to expand on this system in the future.
We also wanted to share some thoughts on the future of Melee in the TLOU MP Mod: many of you have expressed wishes for the in-depth melee system of Part 2's Story Mode to be translated into the mod. Unfortunately, this would require a herculean effort as the melee system in Single Player is incredibly complex and highly scripted between attacker & defender. Getting it right for MP would almost certainly eat up development resources for weeks, if not months.
Therefore, we are going with a more simplistic approach for now, focusing on getting the current system to feel snappy & fair. There will of course be more updates to melee in the future and we are very keen on hearing your feedback on the current iteration, as well as suggestions for how it could be expanded.
